Support for Mind & Spirit

What is Spiritual Care?
Private Spiritual Care sessions begin with a dialogue about your goals for personal growth. Together we will decide on an approach to healing that works best for you. Spiritual Care means that our focus will be on the health of your inner life and how this translates to your overall wellbeing and quality of life.
Our sessions will provide you with a variety of supportive elements, based on your needs. Supportive elements include yoga postures, meditation, breath work, Reiki, emotional support, and ongoing dialogue about your wellbeing.
Kate's aim is to help you feel more at ease in your body, mind, and spirit at the conclusion of each session. The overarching goal of this work is to provide you with consistent, nonjudgmental support and offer concrete resources that will help you become established in self-care and enjoy a more fulfilling way of life.

Spiritual Care Q & A
Why would I come in for a Spiritual Care session? People come to Kate for a variety of reasons, but they are always met with a non-judgmental, supportive advocate in Kate. Some come to Kate when they've been going through a grieving process of any type and are struggling to find support in their social network. Others may feel overwhelmed with the stress of life and are looking for a concrete way to reconnect with themselves.
What happens during my first Spiritual Care Session?
Our first session will be a dialogue. You will have an opportunity to hit the “pause” button and take a loving and compassionate look at your life as it is now, including your gifts and strengths. We will then begin identifying your current spiritual needs and desired areas of personal growth.
Lastly, we will explore the support elements that seem most beneficial for you at this point in your spiritual journey. For example, if you struggle with feeling “overwhelmed,” you might begin to explore physical movements and breathing patterns that can give you a literal sense of grounding. Once you gain this sense of physical support, you might feel safer and more open to exploring your inner world. Think of this first session as an adventure into your inner landscape, where you begin mapping your way forward into a more fulfilling way of life.
Is this a religious thing? Are trying to convert me?
This is a superbly honest and rational question! It’s easy to confuse the terms “spiritual” and “religious.” Kate treats these words like a Venn diagram, where “spiritual” and “religious” represent overlapping circles. For some people, spirituality and religion are circles that do not even touch. These are people who may find solace in the forest rather than a cathedral. For other people, their sense of spirituality is expressed through a specific religion, and the circles might closely overlap.
Kate vows to respect your personal approach to your inward life, how you choose to make meaning, and what helps you feel connected. She trusts that you carry an inner wisdom and capacity to heal. Kate's role is helping you connect with this aspect of yourself. If you’re still trying to figure out how you want to connect with your spirituality, truly there’s nothing more exciting. It would be Kate's honor to accompany you on your journey.
Is this like going to talk therapy? Are you a therapist?
Kate's academic education in religious-spiritual philosophy, along with training and experience as a chaplain, yoga instructor, and Reiki practitioner are what qualify her as your spiritual caregiver. These are different qualifications than those that define a licensed clinical therapist.
Her role is best described through the activities of compassionate presence and active listening. Kate's role is not to diagnose you, but to respectfully witness who you are and help you listen for your own wisdom. We will engage in fruitful dialogue during our sessions, and will discuss aspects of your inward life that are focused on your spirituality rather than your psychology. According to Oxford’s dictionary, the term “psyche” derives “via Latin from Greek psukhē ‘breath, life, soul’.” Just as the most ancient use of the word “psyche” entails a flavor of “spirit,” this will be the realm of our therapeutic encounter.
What do breath work and yoga poses have to do with my spiritual well being?
It’s impossible to do anything without breathing through it. Our breath literally carries us through every situation in our life. We can befriend our breath, and let this be a tool for healing. The ancient yogis taught that where breath goes, awareness follows.
According to publications available through the National Institutes of Health, “a growing number of scientific studies in the field of Contemplative Neuroscience (Thompson, 2009) are reporting accurate descriptions of mental and somatic effects elicited by meditation.” In other words, ancient spiritual tradition and modern medicine agree that breath work and meditation, which are both aspects of yoga, can contribute profound benefit to a practitioner’s wellbeing.
Breath work and yoga poses are also tools that can help us make abstract spiritual metaphors become embodied and feel concrete. For example, how you “find balance” in your life can be explored with breath work and yoga poses.
I feel good spiritually, but can I schedule an appointment for just breath work and posture support? Of course! During Kate’s sessions, she follows your lead to support you in the ways that feel right for you. If your focus changes midway through a session and you sense the need for more spiritual support, Kate will be glad to adapt the session to your in-the-moment needs.
I'm interested, but need more info. Can I talk to Kate before I book a session? That's great! This can be a little confusing, so Kate is happy to provide 20-min. free consultations before you book your first appointment. This can be done over the phone, on Zoom or in-person.
